Passport Photo Maker — exact size, free.
Choose 2 × 2 in, 35 × 45 mm or another passport size. We set the frame, head band and print pixels; you bring the photo. Everything happens in your browser.
Start with a clear portrait.
Upload a JPEG, PNG or WebP from your phone or computer. The photo opens in this tab and stays here — the editor never uploads it.
Photo check
Measured on the current crop, in this browser. These are geometry and image checks, not an official acceptance decision. Glasses, expression, clothing and the issuing authority’s current rules still need a human check.
Fill a sheet.
Arrange copies at their true physical size, add cut guides, then print on photo paper. The sheet is rendered at 300 DPI on this device.
4 × 6 fills the paper edge to edge; enable borderless printing. If your printer cannot print borderless, choose 5 × 7 or A4.
A passport photo is a set of measurements.
A passport photo is not just a square crop of a selfie. The issuing authority cares about the physical print size, how much of the frame the head fills, where the eyes sit, how even the light is, and whether the background is plain. Get one of those wrong and an otherwise good picture can be refused.
This editor takes the guesswork out of the geometry. Choose a country and it sets the output pixels, the head-height band and the eye line. The face detector runs on your device to place the head near the target; you can then drag or zoom the picture by a few percent to finish the crop.
What the editor handles
- Physical size and pixel dimensions for 14 passport presets.
- Head-height and eye-line guides based on the published ranges.
- An on-device smart cutout for busy backgrounds, plus a plain-wall edge cleaner.
- A local 11-point photo check for framing, sharpness, light and background.
- A 4 × 6, 5 × 7, A4 or Letter print sheet with copies at real size — as JPG or PDF.
What it cannot fix
- A soft, blurred or motion-smeared photo.
- Closed eyes, a strong head tilt or hair covering the eyes.
- Harsh shadows, coloured light or a reflection in glasses.
- Beauty filters, heavy retouching or a face that no longer looks like you.
The safest starting point is a recent, sharp, front-facing photo with even light. Leave a little space around the head, take off tinted glasses, and ask someone to hold the phone at eye level. The crop can be generous; the original detail cannot be invented later.
Printing at the right size
Download the single photo for an online application, or download a print sheet for paper. Print at 100% or actual size and turn off “fit to page”. For a 4 × 6 sheet, enable borderless printing; otherwise use the 5 × 7 or A4 sheet. Let the ink dry before cutting along the guides.
Passport photo questions
Does the tool upload my passport photo?
No. The passport photo editor is entirely local. The image is decoded in your browser, the background and crop are computed there, and the JPEG is created on your device. Only the optional AI headshot studio sends an image to a server.
How big should the head be in a US passport photo?
US guidance asks for a head height of 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) in a 2 × 2 inch photo, with the eyes between 1⅛ and 1⅜ inches from the bottom. The editor shows the head band and eye line for that range.
Can I take a passport photo with my phone?
Yes, if the photo is sharp and evenly lit. Use the rear camera if possible, stand against a plain wall, hold the phone at eye level, and ask someone else to take it. Avoid digital zoom and beauty filters.
What background colour should I choose?
Most passport presets start with the background requested by that authority: white, off-white or light grey. Pick a colour, then use Smart cutout to separate you from a busy room. The model runs on your device and downloads once; the edge slider is only a fallback for plain walls.
Why does my photo look different after background cleanup?
Smart cutout runs a portrait-segmentation model on your device and follows hair and shoulders, even in a busy room. The first use downloads the model once; nothing is uploaded. If the model cannot run on your browser, the plain-wall edge cleaner remains available. Some authorities restrict edited backgrounds, so check the document rule first.
