Before you print or submit: photo rules belong to the issuing authority and can change without notice. The table gives the published size, pixels at the stated print density and the usual background. Presets were reviewed in October 2026. This is a starting point, not a guarantee of acceptance. Confirm the current requirements with the passport office, consulate or application portal.
Reading the table

Three numbers to keep straight.

Photo requirements mix physical print measurements, digital pixels and framing proportions. They are related, but not interchangeable.

Physical size

The millimetre or inch size of the printed photo. This is what a passport office measures with a ruler, so it matters even if the digital file looks right.

Digital pixels

How many pixels wide and high the file should be. This site uses 300 DPI for print presets; a portal may publish its own minimum and maximum.

Framing proportion

How much of the frame the head fills, and where the eyes sit. These proportions are why a 35 × 45 photo from one country is not automatically valid for another.

Questions

About these sizes.

Are these photo sizes official?

The sizes are compiled from published authority guidance and common consular checklists. The editor links to the issuing authority where a stable public source exists. Requirements can change without notice, so confirm the current rule with the office or portal that will receive your photo.

Why are pixels different from millimetres?

Millimetres describe the physical print. Pixels describe the digital file. This site converts millimetres to pixels at 300 DPI, unless a preset notes a different density. An online portal may publish its own pixel limits or compress your upload after it arrives.

What is the most common passport photo size?

The two most common formats are the US 2 × 2 inch square and the 35 × 45 mm format used by the UK, Schengen countries and many others. They have different head-height ranges, so start with the preset for your exact document rather than rescaling a previous export.

Can I use one photo for every country?

No. Even when the print size is the same, the head-height window, eye line, expression rules or background colour can differ. Use the original photo and a fresh preset for each application.
